What Homeowners Should Not Attempt
Capacitors store an electrical charge even after power is removed, refrigerant is pressurized and its handling is regulated, and bypassing a safety control removes the protection that keeps a system from destroying itself.

Burning smell, smoke or electrical danger
Shut the equipment off at the thermostat and, if it is safe to do so, at the breaker — then leave it off. Do not restart it to see whether the smell returns. If there is smoke, sparking, or any sign of fire, leave the home and contact emergency services. Otherwise arrange professional service before the system is operated again.
