Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air?

Check the thermostat fan setting first

This is the least expensive answer and it comes up constantly. With the fan set to On, the blower circulates house air continuously — including every minute the compressor is off. That air arrives at the vents at room temperature or warmer, and it feels like the AC has quit.

Set the fan to Auto and the mode to Cool, then set the temperature several degrees below the current room reading and wait for a full cycle before concluding anything.

Go look at the outdoor unit

If the fan on top of the outdoor unit is not spinning while the thermostat is calling for cooling, no heat is leaving the house. A humming sound with a still fan suggests a failed run capacitor or a seized motor. Complete silence points to a contactor, a tripped breaker, a pulled disconnect or a control signal that is not arriving.

Note exactly what you observe — silent, humming, or fan running — because that single detail directs the electrical diagnosis.

Heat pumps have an extra failure mode

Heat pumps reverse refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling. If the reversing valve does not shift, or the thermostat is configured or wired incorrectly, the system can deliver warm air while the thermostat says Cool — sometimes even running a heating cycle in July.

Because Montgomery-area homes commonly use heat pumps, this is worth mentioning when you request service. It changes what the technician tests first.

Refrigerant loss and mechanical failure

A large refrigerant loss removes most of the system's ability to move heat, so vent air approaches room temperature. Smaller losses produce weak cooling instead. Either way, the charge is low because of a leak, and locating that leak is part of the repair.

A compressor that runs but no longer pumps effectively produces the same symptom. Both conditions require gauges and measurement to distinguish.

Ice can also cause warm vent air

A fully frozen evaporator coil blocks airflow so completely that whatever reaches the vents is barely conditioned. If you find ice on the coil or on the larger copper line, turn cooling off and run the fan only to thaw it.

Thawing is not the fix. Ice forms because of restricted airflow or low charge, and unless that underlying condition is corrected the coil will freeze again within a day or two.
